Els, subdued in victory at first, was soon in a more festive mood: drinking toasts out of the claret jug at his Lytham hotel before heading to a car with the jug still in hand for the trip back to London to celebrate with his wife, Liezl, and their two children.
Larkin, a Cincinnati native, had played 19 seasons for the team he grew up adoring, had played for Pete Rose, a legend and a mentor, oakley jawbone sunglasses and had won a World Series for the city in 1990. And this was his chance to reflect.
“You see us up here nice and polished and looking dapper, calm, cool and collected, but I’m going to tell you what,” Larkin said. “This is un-stinking believable!” His voice became a yell — “Unbelievable!”
